Becoming a SWAG Driver

SWAG’s free medical transport service is greatly valued by our clients. We take clients from their homes in Sway to and from local GP surgeries, and to hospitals and clinics throughout the Poole to Southampton area. The service relies entirely on volunteer drivers.

Would you like to become a SWAG driver? To sign up, call us on 01590 681 500 / Option 1 or email us at info@swaghants.org.uk. We always need new drivers.

Typically, you will be called on once a month. Our transport organisers will ensure that your trips fit in with your availability and preferences. We pay the HMRC maximum allowance of 50p per mile towards your running costs.

Driver formalities

To register you as a SWAG driver, we will have to complete some administrative formalities.

  • Disclosure and Barring Services: Some of our clients are vulnerable, so our drivers must be DBS checked. We deal with this and pay the necessary charges.
  • Insurance: You may need to notify your insurer that you are using your vehicle for volunteer driving. There should be no additional charge for this. SWAG also has insurance to mitigate any excess or loss of no-claims bonus if you have an accident on a SWAG drive.
  • Older Drivers: There are additional formalities if you are aged 75 or over - see our Older Drivers Policy Statement here.
  • Personal Information: We will need to hold some of your personal information on our database. See our Data Privacy Policy and your rights here.
